Curcumin, the yellow pigment found in turmeric, helps the body destroy mutated cancer cells, so that they cannot spread through the body and cause more harm.

Lentils "...are of special benefit in managing blood sugar disorders since their high fiber content prevents blood sugar levels from rising rapidly after a meal."

Watermelon makes for an excellent snack for those who are on a weight-loss diet.

It is packed with nutrients and has a much lower calorie count than other fruits.

Cantaloupe (muskmelon) contains the compound adenosine. Patients with heart disease are often given doses of adenosine to keep the blood thin and relieve angina attacks. Cantaloupes are also chockfull of nutrients and a 1 lb. cantaloupe is rarely over 150 calories.

"Maple syrup is a very good source of manganese, an essential co-factor in a number of enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses. Maple syrup also has a good supply of zinc, which can... help with skin problems such as acne, support a healthy prostrate and keep the immune system healthier."

"Maple syrup is usually tapped from wild trees in the United States however, only organically certified maple syrup is guaranteed to be free of agricultural chemicals."

Seaweed is a rich source of iodine. Iodine is necessary for the thyroid to function properly.

Seaweed can be ground into powder and sprinkled on food just like table salt.

A few anise seeds taken with water, according to an old folk remedy, cure hiccups.

I guess that'd be worth trying.

Who knows? It might work.

I highly recommend "Forks over Knives"; a 2011 documentary film which stresses the importance of a whole food, plant-based diet to one's health. I think that this film may be an up-dated version of an earlier film, but I'm not sure. Anyway, it's well worth viewing.

I have mentioned on other threads that I am an ovo-lacto vegetarian. When I say this it doesn't mean that I necessarily think that it's okay to eat dairy products. There is a lot of evidence that dairy isn't all that good for you and female cows live horrific lives providing us with their milk which is nature's perfect food for calves and only calves.

Although I substitute a rice beverage for milk, I still have a weakness for cheese. I eat it once in a blue moon. Therefore, to avoid being a hippocrite, I must call myself a lacto-vegetarian.

I do not have a problem eating unfertilized, free-run chicken eggs, however. This is my choice of food for ensuring that my body gets enough vitamin B12. Therefore, I have to call myself an ovo-vegetarian as well.
