Veggie Cheats

Postby dragonfly » Oct 8, 2002 8:36 pm

On the road to veganism i have discovered many healthful ideas that have stuck with me. Some are like fossilized remains of me on the path to a better diet.

Oh the ones like brown rice, no refined sugar, no fried foods, think drinks, herbs and herbal teas, several small meals throughout the day, limited caffeine, sports drinks... the list goes on.

i'm sure others have also make profound discoveries on the road to a better more healthful diet and lifestyle.

List 'em all here.

You discover so many new foods too - a few years back i wouldn't have known what Quinoa was, the joys of tabasco sauce, or the benefits of yeast extract!

I've also found that my taste buds are far more sensitive now that i'm vegan (so no need for any extra salt put on my food!)

Well, nuts and seeds. Prior to becoming vegan, I was eating a very low fat diet. I did this for almost a year and a quarter to reduce cholesterol levels. It did work, but I was often frequently hungry. To stave off the hunger pangs, I would carbo load, eating lots of whole grain speghetti, brown rice , etc. Now that I eat nuts, seeds, and nut butters, I I stay fuller longer as fat delays digestion, and thus, I feel satisfied much longer. As a result, I don't eat as much food. Plus I am sure these foods help keep my blood sugar at a healthy level. And I am hoping that plant based fats wont raise my cholesterol levels, unless I am one of those hapless individuals whose liver produces too much cholesterol on its own.

I have always eaten lots of fruit and veg. And lots of soy.
