About 40 million tons of food is needed to eliminate the most extreme cases of world hunger, yet farm animals in Western countries are fed 540 million tons of food every year.The world's cattle alone consume a quantity of food equal to the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people.A U.N. report revealed that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars, trucks, trains, ships and planes in the world combined.
